Dr. Angie Carter

Environment, agriculture & food systems, rural justice

Introduction

I am a rural sociologist researching the intersections of environmental, agricultural, and community sustainability through the lens of social justice.

My research has included gender and conservation decision-making in the Midwest Corn Belt, Iowans’ community organizing in protection of clean water and in resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline, and, more recently, regional and local food systems in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Across these projects, my research prioritizes the experiences and knowledges of people and places often excluded or ignored in policy, practice, and research, e.g. women in agriculture, rural residents, or people experiencing food insecurities, in an effort to inform more just and sustainable communities.

To accomplish this, I regularly partner with community and civic groups. I engage community-based and participatory research methods in partnership with natural and biological scientists, farmers, activists, grassroots coalitions, and non-profit organizations.

Please reach out if you'd like to collaborate or brainstorm together.
